Solvitur
solvitur ambulando
phrase / latin
solved by walking; the idea that something is understood or resolved through action rather than theory.
Our Mission:
Solvitur ambulando is a Latin phrase meaning it is solved by walking. It captures the idea that a complex problem is best resolved through practical action, experience, or movement rather than protracted and abstract debate.
We established Solvitur, Inc. to apply this approach to a significant and enduring global issue: facilitating access to genetic information, including digital sequence information (DSI), for the development of new products and technologies, while ensuring that benefit sharing is fair and equitable for countries and indigenous communities that own such information.
With advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and other technologies, genetic information such as digital sequence information (DSI) holds the potential to drive innovation of new products in sectors such as medicine, agriculture, and energy.
At the same time, equitable distribution of benefits arising from commercialization of such products to countries and indigenous communities that own this information would enhance their efforts to protect the foundational source of genetic information – biological diversity.
This “win-win” approach to the use of genetic resources was envisioned in the 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity and was further advanced by the Nagoya Protocol. But, because of the complexity of the global system and differing national perspectives, it has not been fully realized. Rather, with the recent emergence of new international agreements regulating discrete types and uses of genetic information, the ABS system has become even more challenging.
Now, while technology puts us on the brink of new discoveries, there is an urgent need for a new and more direct approach to solving this critical international problem and creating win-win solutions for providers and users of genetic information.
